Clinician talking with a patient in a relaxed consultation – Weight Management Clinic at Salutem Clinic, Cork

Weight Management Clinic in Ballincollig & Cork

Our weight management clinic in Ballincollig and Cork is a GP-led service, based at our practice in Ovens. Weight is a medical matter, not a failure of willpower, and it deserves the same structured, respectful care as any other health condition — you will not be lectured here. You are booking a 30-minute medical assessment, not a prescription: after reviewing your health, your history and your bloods we tell you honestly whether medication is right for you, and sometimes the answer is no. The consultation fee is for that assessment and applies whether or not a medicine is prescribed. The clinic is for adults aged 18 and over, and everything is measured here in person.

Your First Consultation

€125 for your first consultation, plus €30 for blood tests — €155 all told.

Your first appointment is 30 minutes with a GP. It covers:

  • Your full weight history and what you have tried before
  • Diet, activity, sleep, alcohol, mood and eating patterns
  • Your medical and family history, including thyroid and pancreatic history
  • Measured height, weight, BMI, waist and blood pressure
  • Screening for conditions that drive weight or complicate treating it
  • Baseline bloods (€30) — thyroid, HbA1c, cholesterol, kidney, liver and full blood count, reviewed with you
  • An honest conversation about your options — which may or may not include medication

Am I Eligible?

Medication for weight management is considered where:

  • BMI is 30 or above, or
  • BMI is 27 or above with a weight-related condition — type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, fatty liver, PCOS or cardiovascular disease

Meeting the threshold does not automatically mean medication is appropriate — that is what the assessment decides.

If you have, or have ever had, an eating disorder, tell us at your assessment. It changes the approach we take, and it is not a barrier to being seen.

How the Clinic Works

Step 1. First consultation

Thirty minutes with a GP: your full weight history, measured BMI, waist and blood pressure, and baseline bloods. €155 for the consultation and bloods together.

Step 2. Your plan

The assessment decides whether medication is appropriate — it is considered at a BMI of 30, or 27 with a weight-related condition. You leave with a plan either way.

Step 3. Reviews

A one-month review, then six-monthly reviews at €100 plus €30 for bloods. Repeat prescriptions are issued up to your next due review.

About GLP-1 Medicines — Patient Information

How They Work

  • Mimic a natural gut hormone that controls appetite and fullness
  • Slow stomach emptying, reduce appetite and quieten food preoccupation
  • Work alongside changes to diet and activity — not instead of them

Side Effects

  • Nausea, vomiting, constipation and reflux are common — usually worst after a dose increase, and usually settle
  • Contact us for severe abdominal pain spreading to your back, persistent vomiting, or gallbladder symptoms

Who They Are Not Suitable For

  • A personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer, or MEN2
  • Previous pancreatitis
  • Severe gastrointestinal disease
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy within two months
  • Already taking a GLP-1 medicine elsewhere

Contraception & Stopping

  • Effective contraception is needed during treatment; stop at least two months before trying to conceive
  • Weight is commonly regained after stopping — this is long-term treatment for a long-term condition, with a maintenance plan from the start

What the Medicines Cost — and What the HSE Covers

No GLP-1 medicine prescribed for weight management is currently reimbursed by the HSE — so the €80 Drugs Payment Scheme cap does not apply; it covers reimbursed medicines only.

You pay the pharmacy directly, and costs rise in steps as your dose increases — we go through current figures at your assessment, so you can budget for the whole pathway rather than the first month.

Have type 2 diabetes? Different — sometimes reimbursed — options may apply through your diabetes care rather than this clinic. Ask us, or see our chronic disease management services.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I am not eligible?

You leave with a clear picture and a plan. If medication is not right for you — because you do not meet the criteria, a contraindication is found, or something else is driving your weight — we tell you honestly, treat what we find, and agree the next steps. The consultation fee applies either way, because the assessment is the service.

Do I have to take medication?

No. This is a medical assessment with an honest conversation about your options. Many patients are best managed with structured lifestyle support, treatment of an underlying condition, or both — medication is one option, not the programme.

How much weight will I lose?

We do not promise numbers. In clinical trials, GLP-1 medicines produced average losses of roughly 10–20% of body weight over a year or more, depending on the medicine and dose — and individual results vary widely. Keeping weight off depends on continuing treatment and the changes made alongside it.
